Hole were formed in 1989 after Courtney Love places an ad in LA music zine Flipside looking for band members. Eric Erlandson answered the call. Courtney's neighbour Lisa Roberts played bass at their first show in late 1989 with Caroline Rue on drums. The name Hole actually comes from something Courtney's estranged mother said to her over the phone " You can't carry a hole in yourself just because you had a bad childhood". There are also different mentions of the name being traced back to an edition of Medea (The Ancient Greek play) and of course the sexual meaning. Hole broke up in the year 2001 and Courtney is now releasing a new album in 2010 under the band's name.
